Art. How should it be defined so that it can be a universally accepted?

People see it in so many different ways, that no matter how much one tries to make a standard definition, there would be that one person to disagree upon it. Having said this, what makes art art?

Is a slight movement art? How about vomit on canvas and a collection of your neighbor’s garbage?

Some people consider it art, and the others think it’s trash. So in the end it really did not surprise me when a friend of mine sent me a facebook invitation to sign a petition to stop a Costa Rican artist from exhibiting his debatable installation.

Read about “Costa Rican Artist Under Fire For Starving Dog As Part Of Art Exhibit”

At first my jaws dropped. But as I read through the facebook group, it was so full of hatred to what the artist did that I feel each an everyone of them are blinded by the statement the artist tried to make. Despite what they all posted on the wall, I could care less. I see his art. I feel his art.

That does not mean that I hate animals, no. That is ridiculous, they’re the most precious thing on the earth. But like the artist said, people are so hypocritical when it comes to something like this. They take huge actions to stop an artist from starving another dog to make a statement, yet at the very same moment and time the stray dogs are secretly dying. At the very least the dog that had died was acknowledge in a magnificient way (if I must say so, myself) because he aided the artist in showing how hypocritical people are. If he was not in displayed, and the artist did not captur him, he would’ve died anyways from starvation.

If people were to really care about how awful the artist was, they should take a positive action and help and donate to charities and spca’s, supporting them to take in stray animals and keep them well fed. Instead they selfishly point their fingers at someone such as the artist, using him practically as scapegoat from the guilt they should feel for leaving all the other stray dogs in their neighborhood starve to death.

Yeah I agree with you. At first I was surprised by his method, but when I read his message, I understood. There are also tons and tons of people outside in the world who are starving and dying like this dog, if not worst. Yet many people are not doing anything about it but here they are complaining when a mere dog is starved.

Art is so debatable and subjective. Hmm. I guess it will always be opinion no matter what. and that’s what makes it so hard. I guess great art is what people see as difficult to accomplish, original in idea, or in general if it attracts more approval. =|

There’s so much controversy these days on what is perhaps considered ‘right’ or ‘right’ to display, and yet sometimes it’s a relief to know that there are still people out there who are willing to state the truth and display it. Some might get angry and others may think an artist awful for doing so, but in stating the truth, I agree with you that people should change, make a donation, and support stray animals. How are your university applications coming along? Planning to go from BC to the great T.O?

That’s awesome! My sister made it into Ryerson for Urban Planning but she wants to go to Guelph for Landscape Arch. It’s so cool you’re going to come to T.O. all the way out from B.C! You can always stay in Ryerson’s residences! And of course… we could hang out too on the weekends. That’s be pretty awesome but I’ll be in McMaster next year. Aren’t you so excited? I’m going to miss high school so much though!
